2nd at Disney Triathlon

On sept. 21, 2008 i competed in my first olympic distance triathlon. Disney's Athletes for a Cure triathlon. I was a little nervous, going into the race because, i have never done a 10k before, but it turned out okay.

The day before the race i met Simon Lessing, at the NTC pool! He looked like a triathlete and i saw his last name on the paddles, and immediately introduced myself. It was great to meet him. I found out he would be doing the swim in the race.

On race day it was really foggy, you couldn't even see the first bouy, thank goodness simon was there (5 time ITU World Champ) or else i would went way off course on the swim. He was very fast, about 600m into swim he started pulling away and did backstroke to wait up for me. About 1000m into swim he just takes off and i can't see him anymore. It was a long swim for me, i exit the water with cramps in my lats, probably since we weren't allowed to swim warmup. I head onto bike in first place and just keep thinking conservative as my coach Marc, told me. About 50min into bike i'm caught by Andrea Ugazio (old italian friend) and we bike together into t2, when i just take off, and never see him again. Into the run i am pretty scared because i know there is this guy named Anton Van Zyl who is really fast. I feel really, really good on run, but marc is there to tell me to stay conservative, so i do. Anton passes me about mile 3 in the run and i just can't stay with him, the pain hits me pretty quick and i am thankful i hadn't pushed any harder earlier on in the race. I come accross the finish pretty tired, a different kind of pain than i'm used to, ( i guess its olympic distance pain.) But it was a good result and i'm happy for my first olympic triathlon.
